Dark Matters: A Pinocchio tale mixed with Frankenstein monster story
Dark matter tells of a story about the unknown, but creator Crystal Pite would refer to it as the “potent affecting darkness”. The story is divided into two acts. The first act shows a man creating a puppet much like the tale of Pinocchio. The act utilizes puppetry with four black clad figures operating the puppet. The story then continues with the puppet demanding more of what his creator can give him. The act ends with the man dead with his world ruined. A line from Voltaire’s poem about the Lisbon Disaster is then repeatedly recited “a temporary blend of blood and dust … put together only to dissolve … Our being mingles with the infinite.”
The second act proceeds to a more abstract performance. It showcases a technique Pite calls “Frontier”. Group of dancers all dressed in loose black clothing from head to toe moves together as one. The black identical clothing gives them freedom and anonymity. With this technique they need to move together as one. Each member should move along with the others with a high degree of trust.
Crystal Pite first started her career in dancing at age of 17 as member of the Ballet British Columbia and Ballet Frankfurt. Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM was formed in 2001 and tours both nationally and internationally. Among the group’s productions include “Fault” (2008), “Lost Action” (2006), “Uncollected Work” (2002) and “Double Story” (2004) co-created with Richard Siegal.
Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM will be performing Dark Matters in Dusseldorf, Germany on May 18, 2010 at the Tanzhaus NRW; Potsdam, Germany on May 21 and 22, 2010 at the Tanzfabrik and in Venice, Italy on May 30 and 31, 2010 at the Venice Biennale.
